5. Waiting

“Waiting. If you are sincere, you have light and success.”

You are faced with a danger that must be overcome. Don’t attack it. Wait, secure in the strength of your Inner Truth. Your time will come.

…………………………………………………………………………

What danger or difficulty lies ahead of you? Don’t jump into it with your fists flying, but do approach it confidently, with inner strength that is visible to others

R.L. Wing, in her book The I Ching Workbook, explains it this way: “An external approach to inner development can be compared to yoga practices. By adopting certain physical postures of balance and discipline, a resonant chord is struck in the spirit. Such an alignment between the internal and the external creates a more sensitive consciousness, a certain enlightened awareness, and an overall healthy atmosphere.”

We received only one changing line with Waiting, Line 3.

32. Duration

“Duration. Success. No blame.”

Enduring laws of change govern nature — day and night; winter, then spring, followed by summer and fall. Each human life has the same cycles of light and dark. Maintain your Inner Truth through these inevitable changes, and you will have success.

…………………………………………………………………….

Twice you have been told Great Power is available to you. Likewise, twice you have been warned against wasting this energy on fighting old battles.

Duration is the Future of Great Power. Receiving this hexagram means: Now you need to hang in there. Duration means adapting to changing circumstances of life, while staying on your own, personal path.

The Book of Changes says: Fall starts tomorrow. It’s going to get colder. You can’t change that. There is no blame in doing what you have to do to get ready.

A new season is coming in your interior, personal life, too. Be prepared.

34. Power of the Great, Line 6

“Goat butts against a hedge — can’t go backward, can’t go forward.”

You have pushed yourself into a deadlock. Relax your position and withdraw quietly.

………………………………………………………………………

You are using your Great Power to try to overwhelm an opponent, but it won’t work. Pay attention. This is the second time we have received this line in recent days.

The Book of Changes says: Let go of the “battle,” whatever it is. The Universe wants you to use this Great Power on a larger, more important struggle. Continued petty wrangling is a waste of precious energy.

Let go of any long-standing conflicts and use your energy on the challenges that lie ahead.

34. Power of the Great

“Energy in harmony with the movement of heaven.”

A time of Great Power has arrived. Your inner strength and outward actions will combine to make significant achievement possible.

……………………………………………………………………………..

Sound familiar? We received 34. Power of the Great on Sept. 5, 2021. And here it is again on Sept. 17. The first time, it came with Changing Lines 4, 5, and 6. Today — only Line 6.

Receiving it signals a time when you can move forward and be confident you can create great things.

Receiving it again means you’re not paying attention: What you are trying to achieve is in alignment with the greater good. The Universe wants you to do this, whatever it is. But apparently, it’s not happening.

If you want to know why, check out Changing Line 6.

44. Temptation

“The inferior thing seems harmless and inviting.”

Something is Tempting you. Beware. It is more dangerous than you can foresee.

………………………………………………………….

The Well predicted supreme good fortune, an unusually positive message from the Book of Changes.

You may well be feeling elated, happy and energized, ready to take on the world. Things are going so well, what’s a little detour from your path?

The Book of Changes says: Stop right where you are. Giving in to this Temptation may harm you a great deal more than you imagine.

What’s your current Temptation? If you’re on a diet, it may be those crab rangoons. If you’re back at work, it may be the new guy in accounting. If you’ve been exercising regularly, taking just one day off can start you back-sliding into couch potato-hood.

You are having supreme good fortune. Don’t blow it.

48. The Well, Line 6

“She draws from The Well without hindrance. Supreme good fortune.”

There is nothing to stop you now. You may drink deeply from The Well of your Inner Truth. Being truly yourself is the best possible good fortune.

………………………………………………………………….

Supreme good fortune!

With Line 6, the Book of Changes says: You have done the “maintenance” work necessary, as prescribed in Line 4 (see previous post), and now the way is clear.

The top regret of the dying is “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.”

That doesn’t have to be you. You have the supreme good fortune to pursue the path that is truly yours.

48. The Well, Line 4

“The well is being lined. No blame.”

While a well is being improved, it cannot be used. You must do some basic maintenance before you can fully restore the Inner Truth that lies at the bottom of The Well.

………………………………..……………………..

What kind of inner work do you need? Do you need to calm down and slow down? Do you need to cheer up? Do you need to focus? Do you need to quit snapping at everybody? Do you need to go back on your diet and increase your exercise?

The Book of Changes says: Do what you need to do for your self. There is no blame in not making yourself available to everybody else’s needs, all the time. The clarity you gain from your inner development will be more than worth it for everyone.

Tomorrow: Line 6: “Supreme good fortune.”

48. The Well

“The town may be changed, but the well cannot be changed.”

Your circumstances will change, but your Inner Truth is always there, like the clear water at the bottom of The Well. You must reach down deep and drink from it.

………………………………………………………………………..

The world is in chaos right now, with Covid and multiple natural disasters across the globe. Your own personal world is likely in chaos too, as you try to navigate this new landscape.

The Well tells you: You have, deep inside you, an Inner Truth. This is what and who you are, what interests you the most, your true passion. You can’t change it. It doesn’t disappear just because changing circumstances swirl around it.

Knowing your Inner Truth is one thing. Reaching down through all the muck and debris to get to it is quite another.

We received two changing lines, Lines 4 and 6, with additional advice on this process.

Tomorrow: Line 4: “The well is being lined.”

9. Taming Power of the Small

“The taming power of the small has success.”.

You are restrained in pursuit of what you want. Small steps succeed. Pushing won’t.

……………………………………………………………

Taming Power of the Small is the future of the Power of the Great. Using Great Power didn’t work; you just pushed yourself deeper into the struggle.

Let’s say you want a promotion at work. You took on a big, difficult task and threw everything you had at it. It only got you mired in more difficulties.

The Book of Changes says: Not everything can be accomplished in one swell foop. What you want right now requires small steps, taken in their own, natural time. Relationships are among those things requiring natural growth.

What do you want? Go after it one step at a time.

34. Power of the Great, Line 6

“Goat butts against a hedge — can’t go backward, can’t go forward.”

You have pushed yourself into a deadlock. Relax your position and withdraw quietly.

………………………………………………………………..

Line 6 is our last changing line in the tale of the goat and the hedge. Our main message, Great Power, said a time of great power has arrived. (See blog from three days ago.) Unfortunately, it seems as though you have used this Great Power to keep fighting against the hedge.

The Book of Changes says: You used your power to fight, instead of using it to advance your own position. You could have waltzed right through the hedge — see Line 4 from two days ago — with “quiet and steady effort,” but you didn’t do that. Now you’re stuck.

What thorny situation are you stuck in? Further pushing and wrangling is a waste of time. Relax your position and you will be able to slip out and move on.

The Yi isn’t kidding about this. Our future message continues the same advice . . .
