22. Grace

“In small matters, it is favorable to undertake something.”

Pay attention now to the form — the Grace — of what you create: the correct position of your yoga, the placement of elements in your painting, the structure of your novel or poem. Make the form as inspiring and true as the content.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………….

This one hit me right between the eyes.

I have been unhappy with the format of this blog for some time: too plain, too staid, no movement, no visual interest whatsoever. I keep telling myself I need to do some research on formats for WordPress, but I never do.

The truth is, I don’t care about anything but the content. Once I have finished the message of the day, I’m done. I look at format and think, “Well, maybe tomorrow.”

Receiving Grace — without any changing lines, btw — reminds me of the artist’s obligation: If you are trying to communicate something, you have an obligation to do it in a way that others can understand.

An attractive form will lead others to the content. An unattractive or inappropriate form will be a barrier to the content.

Since my goal is to bring the wisdom of the I Ching — the Book of Changes — to present-day, everyday life, I need a format that fits current technology.

And the lack of changing lines tells me: I’m going to be working at it a long time.

What area of your life do you need to add some Grace to?

46. Pushing Upward

“Pushing Upward has supreme success.”

Now is the time to focus on small — but steady — efforts. You must “heap up small things to achieve something great.”

……………………………………………………………………………………………..

Our Main Message was Peace; Pushing Upward is the Future. Achieving inner Peace will allow you to maintain your focus on what matters most to you.

What would you like to achieve? A better relationship? Completing a marathon? Make enough money to buy a new car?

The Book of Changes says: Whatever it is that you want, take advantage of the benefits Peace brings you.

Supreme success will come when you “heap up small things to achieve something great.”

11. Peace, Line 1

“When grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it.”

Your roots are strong and correct. If you act now, you can have great influence.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Are you thinking of making a major move? Like asking out the Cute Guy in Accounting? Or quitting your job?

The Book of Changes says: Not only will you be successful in this move, you will bring a lot of support with you when you go.

Go ahead. Make your move. You will have a future of Pushing Upward.

………………………….

Tomorrow: Future. “Pushing Upward has supreme success.”

How the Book of Changes Works

“The way in which the Book of Changes works can best be compared to an electrical circuit reaching into all situations. The circuit only affords the potentiality of lighting; it does not give light. But when contact with a definite situation is established in the questioner, the ‘current’ is activated, and the given situation is illumined.”

Richard Wilhelm

11. Peace

“The small departs, the great approaches.”

Peace is possible. Relationships may not change, but your attitude toward them will. Disagreements will “depart” as you realize their relative insignificance. You will be free to focus on the larger benefits of this association.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

What relationship do you have that is mired in petty arguments? It could be a spouse, a boss, your sister, your 13-year-old, your BFF . . .

The Book of Changes says: Let it go. Remember — You Can’t Change Other People.

Peace will come when you realize the value of this relationship far outweighs the minor annoyances.

Tomorrow: Changing Line 1. “When the grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it.”

30. Clarity

“Fire over fire — that which is bright rises twice.”

Your flame burns bright. Cling to what fuels it: your Inner Truth.

………………………………………………………………………………………..

The future of Keeping Still is Clarity. This hexagram has a dual meaning; it means “attachment” as well as “brightness.”

The Book of Changes says: By Keeping Still and focusing on yourself for a time, you will achieve Clarity about who you are and what you are doing.

Your attachment to your Inner Truth will fuel your Clarity.

52. Keeping Still, Line 4

“Keeping her trunk still.”

You have made progress in ridding yourself of inner turbulence, but continuous attention to maintaining inner balance is still essential.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

How have you made progress in getting rid of “inner turbulence?” Have you let go of some activities that are just too much for you right now? Did you quit worrying where your boyfriend was one night six months ago?

The Book of Changes says: Be realistic about what you can accomplish in every sphere of your life. That will give you inner balance.

Most Americans suffer from all-or-nothing thinking: If it’s not “the best,” then it’s the worst. These wild swings from one end of the spectrum to the other cause your inner turbulence. Get real and maintain your balance.

52. Keeping Still, Line 1

“Keeping her toes still.”

Stop — before you start something you cannot control. Pause and think before taking that first step.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

The Book of Changes says: You are tempted to jump right in to a new situation. Wait. You need to assess this thoroughly before starting out.

Your need for Keeping Still is at its height right now. Do whatever you need to do to still your thoughts and calm your inner distress.

The Yi says: This need for stillness will not go away any time soon. We have one more changing line before looking to the future.

Tomorrow: Line 4: “Keeping her trunk still.”

52. Keeping Still

“She goes out in her courtyard and does not see her people. No blame.”

You need to focus on yourself now. Practice yoga, meditation — whatever allows you to still your thoughts and calm your inner distress. There is no blame in not putting others’ needs first all the time.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Keeping Still signals a situation where you need to shift your attention to yourself.

The Book of Changes says: You do not have to engage with every request for attention. Give yourself a break.

No blame attaches to giving yourself time and attention.

28. Great Load

“The ridge pole sags to the breaking point. A dangerous time.”

Your burdens weigh you down almost to the point of collapse. Do whatever it takes to lighten your load — and do it now.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

A Great Load is, unfortunately, the future of Darkening of the Light. These dark times have given you a Great Load to carry, and it’s about to do you in.

The Book of Changes says: There’s a physical and psychological limit to what you can bear, and you are pushing past yours. You’ve got to let go of some part of the Great Load you are carrying, ASAP.

Maybe you’ve been asked to work more and more due to a shortage of workers. Maybe you have taken on the role of caretaker to someone dear to you, in addition to your job. Maybe you are constantly worrying about someone whose behavior you can’t control.

Whatever it is, it’s too much. Set your least essential burden down.

PPS You’re probably thinking “What a bummer of a ‘fortune!” Just remember, the Book of Changes is most valuable precisely because “The I Ching doesn’t tell you what you want to hear. It tells you what you need to know.

36. Darkening of the Light, Line 5

. . . as with Prince Chi.

Prince Chi could not withdraw from the court of the tyrant Chou Hsin. It is the same with you — whether it’s your family, your relationship, your job, your social circle — you are stuck where you are for now. Maintain your Inner Truth.

………………………………………………………………………………………

Our final changing line tells us: The Darkening of the Light will continue into the foreseeable future. These are dark times, and they won’t get any better soon.

The Book of Changes says: Don’t let go of your inner light. You will not have to sort packages for Amazon forever. Keep your flame alive while you endure the Dark.

The immediate Future of Darkening of the Light will have challenges of its own.
