10. Conduct

. . . treading on the tail of the tiger . . . “

You must tread carefully now. You are dealing with a very volatile individual. Proceed with caution and care, and the tiger will not bite.

…………………………………………………………………..

Who is your “very volatile individual?” The most common answer is (big surprise!) The Boss. Mothers-in-law rate highly, too.

The Book of Changes says: You can successfully “get around” this person if you proceed carefully and cautiously.

Don’t push their buttons. Don’t aggravate them. Don’t annoy them. Keep your focus on your own destination.

……………………………….

Tomorrow: Line 5: Resolute conduct. You must maintain your inner independence and resolve.

2. The Receptive

Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.”

Now is the time to be yielding and Receptive to new ideas. Do not try to lead, and do not try to go it alone.

……………………………………………………………………..

The Receptive is the Future of our Main Message The Gentle Wind/ Proceeding Humbly, which told us we would find “Success through what is small.”

Today we are told we need to be Receptive to what life brings us in the Future. Wilhelm says of this: “Man likewise attains eternity if he does not strive vaingloriously to achieve everything of his own strength but quietly keeps himself receptive to the impulses flowing to him from the creative forces.”

What impulses are flowing to you from the creative forces? Be Receptive.

57. The Gentle Wind / Proceeding Humbly, Line 6

Proceeding Humbly under the bed. She loses her property and an axe. Perseverance brings misfortune.”

Sometimes, in looking for something or someone to blame for our current circumstances, we come up empty. If that is the case with you, let go of the search. Proceed Humbly past your difficulties.

……………………………………………………………………….

Line 2 also told us to “Proceed Humbly under the bed,” which meant to look for a hidden enemy, perhaps a person, but maybe your own fear, or anxiety, or impatience.

With Line 6, The Book of Changes says: Give it up. To keep searching for something or someone to blame is wasting your time and energy. To persist in this will bring misfortune.

Our Future Reading advises us to meet what is to come by being Receptive.

Tomorrow: Future: “Quiet Perseverance brings good fortune.”

57. Gentle Wind / Proceeding Humbly, Line 5

“No beginning, but an end.”

The start of the current situation hasn’t been good, but you are coming to a time where you can influence things to a positive conclusion.

Do you have a relationship you would like to improve? Have all your efforts so far gone unrewarded?

It could be a romantic relationship — or it could be your relationship with your mother, sister, boss, teacher, BFF — whatever.

The Book of Changes says: Keep up the slow, steady, small steps. Soon they will lead to unmistakable progress. “Success through what is small.”

We have one more Changing Line to consider, Line 6, and frankly, it’s something of a bummer.

………………………..

Tomorrow: Line 6: “Proceeding Humbly under the bed. She loses her property and an axe.”

57. The Gentle Wind / Proceeding Humbly, Line 3

“Repeatedly Proceeding Humbly. Humiliation.”

Too much focus on the inner workings of your mind, or dwelling on the past, will be harmful. Do not let it cripple your ability to move forward.

……………………………………………………………………………………

Line 2 advised that we find the “hidden enemy” that is holding us back. Anxiety, fear, and impatience were the possibilities.

The Book of Changes now says: Don’t spend too much time and energy dwelling on these hidden enemies. Acknowledge them and bring them into the light. Then keep moving forward.

Remember: “Success through what is small.”

We’ve got two more Changing Lines of advice from the Yi.

Tomorrow: Line 5: “No beginning, but an end.”

57. The Gentle Wind, Line 2

“Proceeding humbly under the bed.”

A hidden enemy is present, most likely your own fear and anxiety. Bring it out in the open, and it will lose its power.

……………………………………………………………………….

What is your “hidden enemy?” Fear and anxiety are common, but in this case it may be your patience — or lack thereof.

The Book of Changes says: You have been advised in the Main Message that you can achieve “success through what is small.” You look at the path before you, calculate the small steps it will take, and say, “I can’t wait that long. I want success now!

Bring your “hidden enemy” out into the light. You can deal with it.

Impatience isn’t the only possible pitfall awaiting you. There’s also introspection.

Tomorrow: Line 3: “Proceeding Humbly repeatedly. Humiliation.”

57. Proceeding Humbly/The Gentle Wind

“Success through what is small.”

You will get where you want to go only by taking slow, steady, small steps. Plot a straight path to your desired destination, and stay on it.

I like to call this the Divi Divi hexagram. The Divi Divi tree is Aruba’s natural compass, always pointing in a southwestern direction due to the trade winds that constantly blow across the island from the north-east.

As Brian Browne Walker explains it, “A wind that changes direction often . . . only stirs up the sky. The wind that causes real change is the one that blows consistently in the same direction. There is an important lesson for us in this example.”

The Book of Changes says: You will have success if you work for it in small, even steps. Forget about the Great Leap Forward.

Plenty of change is in the forecast — we received four (4) Changing Lines with this new Main Message.

Tomorrow: Changing Line 2: “Proceeding humbly under the bed.”

The Well

“The town may be changed, but the well cannot be changed.”

Circumstances around you will change, but your Inner Truth will always be there, like the clear water at the bottom of The Well. You must reach down deep and drink from it.

…………………………………………………………………….

The Well is the Future of our Main Message, Inner Truth. What a response to our request for general guidance for the coming year this is!

First, we were advised to spend the coming year finding our Inner Truth, and “take on a great challenge and succeed.” Then we were advised not to have “secret designs,” not to take on the emotions of others, and not to brag or proselytize.

And now we are advised that finding the clear water at the bottom of The Well — your Inner Truth — is not enough. You must make your actions reflect your Inner Truth.

A tough assignment for the coming year.

Inner Truth, Line 6

“Cockcrow penetrating to heaven. Misfortune.”

When you find your Inner Truth, you don’t need to shout about it. Don’t attempt to talk others into your truth — it won’t work. Lead by example, and others will seek you out.

……………………………………………………………………….

Our final Changing Line, Line 6, advises you not to be showy or pretentious about finding your Inner Truth. Remember — it’s your Inner Truth, not anyone else’s.

The Book of Changes says: Let the Tao in your life speak for itself. Seeing it, others will seek you out.

Tomorrow: Future: The Well

Inner Truth, Line 3

” . . . now she sobs, now she sings . . . “

If your happiness depends on the actions of another, you will never find peace. Focus on your own path.

…………………………………………………………………..

” . . . if he would just _______, then everything would be okay. ”

When I ran a domestic violence shelter, I used to hear that all the time. Fill in the blank with the difficulty of your choice — “if he would just quit drinking” was a common one.

The Book of Changes says: It doesn’t really matter what the problem is. It is a Law of Life: You can’t change other people.

Detach yourself from the emotions and actions of others. Put your life energy toward your own Inner Truth.
