38. Opposition / Diversity

“Thus, amid all fellowship, the superior woman retains her individuality.”

You don’t have to change yourself to get along with others. Likewise, you don’t have to see them as Opponents, someone who must be “defeated.” Seek harmony instead.

The differences in Eastern thought and Western thought are highlighted in this hexagram, which is the future of Subordinate.

Wilhelm translated it as Opposition — a situation with two, opposing forces. But Taoist Master Alfred Huang sees the same situation and calls it Diversity.

Huang explains: “Diversity is natural and unavoidable. The key is in seeking harmony. To the Chinese, all diversity can be harmonized, no matter whether it is between members of a household, or members of a society, or between nations of the world.”

What human difference are you Opposing? Try looking at it as Diversity, with an opportunity for harmony.
