9. The Taming Power of the Small

“The taming power of the small has success.”

You are restrained in the pursuit of what you want. Small steps will succeed. Pushing won’t.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

You have been working toward a goal, or a destination. Perhaps it is improvement in a relationship, perhaps it’s a promotion at work. Maybe it’s losing 20 pounds.

The Yi says: You will reach your destination if you continue taking small, steady steps.

Technology has conditioned us to expect an instant effect, or response to, our actions. The Taming Power of the Small is the Book of Changes’ reminder that we are human, and still governed by natural laws of growth and development.

Heed the advice from Chap. 64 of the Tao te Ching:

“Rushing into action, you fail. Trying to grasp things, you lose them. Forcing a project to completion, you ruin what was almost ripe.” (From Stephen Mitchell’s Tao te Ching, A New English Version)

In other words, Easy Does It.
