54. Subordinate

The superior woman understands the transitory in the light of eternity.

You are in a subordinate role, which causes you discomfort. Accept it for now. Focus on the long-range benefits of the relationship. This will see you through.

In traditional translations of the I Ching, the Book of Changes, No. 54 is called The Marrying Maiden. The Judgment reads: “The Marrying Maiden. Undertakings bring misfortune. Nothing that would further.”

The Marrying Maiden was a girl taken into the household of a man who already had a first, official wife. ” . . . the girl who enters enters the family at the husband’s wish subordinates herself modestly to the wife as younger sister.” (Wilhelm translation)

I prefer a broader reading; one that includes anyone in any sort of Subordinate role they find uncomfortable.

Example: Your boss drives you nuts. You are ready to quit. The Yi says: Don’t be hasty. Right now, you need to focus on the long-term benefits of the situation, namely, you have a paycheck. Leaving this job would bring up a whole new set of problems, potentially much more difficult than dealing with an unpleasant boss. Hang in there until economic circumstances improve.

Subordinate was our future reading from the main message of Waiting with Changing Lines 3, 4, and 5.
